A major worker, or simply a major, is one of the big workers of a polymorphic colony. Majors are usually larger and more heavily built than normal workers, and the most obvious difference is the head: it's often huge, packed with the muscles that move their powerful mandibles.

Majors take care of the jobs that need extra strength. In Messor barbarus, they use their big red heads to crack open seeds that the smaller workers can't handle. In Pheidole pallidula, the big-headed majors break down food for the minors and the queen, and they're also great at defending the nest. That's why majors are often nicknamed soldiers.

Majors are never the majority. A colony only invests in them when it can afford to, so you won't see them in a brand-new colony. They usually start to appear once the colony has a good number of workers and a steady food supply.

In practice

  • If your polymorphic colony isn't producing majors yet, give it time and plenty of protein.
  • For Messor, offer a variety of seeds of different sizes. The majors will deal with the tougher ones.
  • Messor majors can chew tunnels through soft materials like Ytong, so watch your nest walls closely for escape routes.
  • Majors are perfect for photos and close observation, so don't miss the chance to watch them working.
